Poettker Construction of Breese has been awarded the contract to build a $4.6 million fire station with stimulus money.  The station is being built at St. Louis Downtown Airport in Sauget, Illinois, next to Oliver’s restaurant.

Congressman Jerry Costello, who secured the $4.6 million for the new construction via the America Recovery and Reinvestment Act, gave a brief presentation at the ground-breaking ceremony on Tuesday, July 9.

“We must maintain and improve our transportation infrastructure to ensure a robust and efficient economy,” Costello said.  “This is exactly the type of domestic investment we have neglected in recent years, and I will continue to support these efforts. This funding will enhance safety as St. Louis Downtown Airport continues to grow.”

Hanson Professional Services, Inc. designed the station.  Construction will last for approximately one year.

For over 75 years, the St. Louis Downtown Airport has been the St. Louis region’s front door for business aviation visitors and is ranked 42nd in the nation for general aviation airports.  The St. Louis Downtown Airport has over 1,013 acres of land and is home to more than 268 based aircraft.  The airport generates an economic impact of more than $300 million to the region.
